SAMAI

SAMAI

Samai bottle on wiskey barrel with bamboo sticks

Where rum meets Kampot Pepper.

Where rum meets Kampot Pepper.

Where rum meets Kampot Pepper.

Some ingredients carry the identity of a place.

For Cambodia, Kampot Pepper is one of them.

Grown in the southern province of Kampot for generations, it is celebrated by chefs around the world for its extraordinary aroma, complexity and character. It is more than a spice. It is part of Cambodia’s culinary heritage.

And it has found an unexpected partner: rum.

Founded in Phnom Penh in 2014, Samai set out to create something that barely existed at the time: premium Cambodian rum.

The starting point was close to home. Cambodian molasses. A tropical climate made for maturation. Local ingredients and flavours. Combined with traditional rum-making techniques and a determination to create spirits that could genuinely express where they came from.

The result is a collection of distinctly Cambodian rums.

Samai Gold Rum sits at its heart. Rich, complex and shaped by tropical ageing, it shows what Cambodian rum can be in its purest form. Alongside it, Samai Kampot Pepper Rum takes one of the country’s most celebrated ingredients and brings its aromatic spice into the liquid, creating something familiar enough to understand, yet different enough to remember.

Other expressions continue that exploration, from White Rum to PX Rum Liqueur, each offering another perspective on what can come from a Cambodian distillery.

But perhaps the most interesting thing about Samai is what the collection represents.

For decades, the global rum conversation has been dominated by the Caribbean and Latin America. Yet sugarcane has deep roots across Southeast Asia, and Cambodia has the climate, ingredients and culture to tell a rum story entirely of its own.

Samai is helping write that story.

From its distillery in Phnom Penh, it is introducing a different expression of rum to bartenders and drinkers around the world. One shaped not by borrowed Caribbean imagery, but by the flavours, people and landscape of Cambodia.

Kampot Pepper may be one of the flavours that makes people take notice.

But the bigger story is Cambodian rum.
